Hey ![]()
These are two different mechanisms, so it’s normal to see both.
overall_max_message_rate = '500/minute' in your sources.toml is a static limit that you define yourself. In your example, KumoMTA will not send more than 500 messages per minute for that tenant/source configuration, regardless of what the receiving provider is telling you.
TSA, on the other hand, is adaptive. It observes SMTP responses from receiving providers and can adjust the delivery behavior when it detects throttling or other signals.
So you can think of it this way:
overall_max_message_rate= “I never want to send faster than this.”- TSA = “Within my configuration, adapt delivery when the receiving provider tells me to slow down.”
You generally don’t need to choose between the two. A sensible configured rate gives you control over your normal sending speed, while TSA helps react to provider feedback.
If you are just starting with KumoMTA, I would first make sure your static limits are reasonable for your traffic and reputation rather than relying on TSA as a replacement for proper rate configuration.
Also, what you shared is a queue helper config with tenant throttling. There is also an outbound shaping helper that gives you additional throttle control.
